Mount Longido

Mount Longido – Northern Tanzania’s Hidden Hiking Gem

Mount Longido is an underrated yet highly rewarding hiking destination in northern Tanzania, located near the Kenya border, about 80 km north of Arusha. Standing at 2,629 meters (8,625 feet), the mountain offers a blend of cultural encounters, wildlife sightings, and sweeping views that stretch as far as Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, and the endless Maasai plains.

This trek takes you through Maasai lands, dense montane forests, and rugged rocky slopes—making it a memorable adventure for nature lovers and hikers seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Hike Overview

  • Distance: ~15 km round trip

  • Duration: 6–8 hours (depending on pace and weather)

  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging

  • Elevation Gain: ~1,500 m

Hiking Route

1. Start at Longido Village

Your journey begins at Longido town, where you’ll be greeted by the vibrant Maasai culture. The trail passes through traditional Maasai homesteads and open plains, where you may spot giraffes, antelopes, and zebras grazing in the distance.

2. Dense Forest Zone

Soon, the trail enters a lush montane forest alive with bird calls and shaded by towering trees. Expect steep sections with tangled roots and rocky footing—a good test for your stamina. Keep an eye out for colorful bird species and perhaps even monkeys.

3. Rocky Climb to the Summit

The final ascent is the most demanding, with rocky outcrops and sections that require a bit of scrambling. As you approach the summit, the forest thins, opening up breathtaking panoramic views of Kilimanjaro, Meru, and the vast savanna below.

4. Descent to Longido Village

The descent takes about 3–4 hours, retracing your path back through the forest and open plains to Longido Village.

Best Time to Hike

  • Dry Season: June–October & January–February

    • Clear skies, crisp air, and easier trail conditions.

  • Rainy Season: March–May & November–December

    • Trails can be slippery and challenging, but the forest becomes lush and vibrant.
