Tanzania Safari Seasons

Tanzania Safari Seasons

Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the wildlife experience, landscapes, weather, and migration patterns change throughout the year. TANAPA notes that dry periods generally make wildlife easier to spot around water sources, while the greener seasons bring lush scenery and migratory birdlife. (Tanzania Parks)

For safari planning, it is useful to think about Tanzania in four broad seasons: the dry season, the short rains, the green/calving season, and the long rains. These are not rigid boundaries, and conditions can vary between regions.

January–March: Green Season & Calving

January to March is particularly important for visitors interested in the Great Wildebeest Migration and calving season. The southern Serengeti and Ndutu area become the main focus, with large numbers of wildebeest gathering on the short-grass plains. TANAPA identifies January–March as the main calving period, with the southern Serengeti becoming a major wildlife nursery. (Tanzania Parks)

This period can offer excellent opportunities for seeing newborn animals and predator activity. The landscape is generally greener following the rains, making it particularly attractive for photography.

April–May: Long Rains & Green Tanzania

April and May are traditionally associated with the long rains. Tanzania remains open for safari, but rainfall can be heavier and some roads and tracks can become muddy. TANAPA describes March–May as the heavy-rain period in some northern parks. (Tanzania Parks)

The reward is a very green landscape, fewer visitors in many areas, dramatic skies and excellent conditions for birdwatching and photography.

June–October: Dry Season & Classic Safari

June to October is the main dry season in northern Tanzania. Wildlife tends to become easier to locate around remaining water sources, while roads are generally drier and conditions are favorable for game drives. (Tanzania Parks)

This is also an important period for following the Great Migration. The migration moves through different parts of the Serengeti ecosystem rather than remaining in one location. The traditional migration cycle places the herds in the western and northern Serengeti during parts of the dry season, with river-crossing activity generally associated with the northern Serengeti later in the season. (Tanzania Parks)

November–December: Short Rains & Green Season

November and December bring the short rains. The landscape becomes greener, temperatures can be pleasant, and visitor numbers may be lower than during the peak dry-season months. TANAPA describes November–December as the short-rain period in the Serengeti. (Tanzania Parks)

The migration also begins moving south and east, eventually reaching the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area as the calving season approaches.

Great Migration Calendar

The important thing to remember is that the Great Migration is not a single event that happens in one place at one fixed time. The herds continuously move through the Serengeti ecosystem in response to rainfall and fresh grazing. TANAPA’s migration map illustrates the approximate annual cycle from the southern Serengeti in January–March, through the central and western areas, and toward the northern Serengeti around August–October.

Approx. period Main migration area What to expect
January–March Southern Serengeti / Ndutu Calving, newborn wildebeest and predator activity
April–May Central & Western Serengeti Herds moving north and west; green landscapes
June–July Western/Central Serengeti Large herds, rutting activity and movement north
August–October Northern Serengeti Northern migration and possible Mara River crossings
November–December Eastern/Southern Serengeti Herds move back toward the southern plains

For Joagro Safaris, a useful way to present this to clients is: there is no single “best month” for every safari. The ideal travel period depends on whether the client is looking for classic dry-season game viewing, the Ndutu calving season, northern migration, green-season scenery, birding, or a quieter safari experience. This also means that an itinerary should be designed around the specific wildlife experience and location, rather than simply choosing a month.
