Tanzania’s Newly Introduced Mandatory Travel Insurance for Foreign Visitors
Tanzania has announced the introduction of a mandatory travel insurance policy for foreign visitors, set at a fee of $44 per person. The initiative, aimed at enhancing visitor safety and ensuring access to emergency support during travel, has drawn both attention and questions within the tourism sector.
Although officially introduced, the policy is not yet in full implementation. Authorities have not provided a clear timeline for when enforcement will begin, leaving tour operators, hoteliers, and international travelers uncertain about the immediate requirements.
Equally, the method of payment has not been clarified. At present, it remains unclear whether travelers will be expected to purchase the insurance online before arrival, at entry points such as airports and land borders, or through travel agents and tour operators. This lack of clarity has created some hesitation, particularly for tourists already planning their upcoming trips.
Travel insurance has long been recommended for international visitors to Tanzania, especially given the popularity of wildlife safaris, mountain climbing, and beach holidays in Zanzibar. The new policy seeks to make coverage universal, ensuring that all tourists are protected in the event of medical emergencies, accidents, or unforeseen disruptions during their stay.
Industry stakeholders, while supportive of measures that enhance visitor safety, have emphasized the need for clear guidelines on payment procedures, coverage details, and how the policy will integrate with private insurance that many travelers already carry.
For now, travelers are encouraged to continue securing comprehensive private travel insurance until the government finalizes the implementation framework. Tour operators are also closely monitoring updates and are expected to provide guidance to visitors once official payment channels and procedures are confirmed.
As Tanzania continues to grow as a leading African tourism destination, the introduction of mandatory travel insurance reflects efforts to align with international standards. However, greater clarity and communication will be essential to ensure smooth adoption and maintain confidence among travelers and partners in the tourism industry.
